‘Tell me he’s just kidding, Peter,’ Ellie groaned. She put on an assurance-bolstering smile for Charlie’s benefit.

‘ Please tell me he’s only kidding.’

‘Your Charlie did well to pick one of the O’Brien lads for a mate,’ Jock said right out of the blue. He was taking his seat again now that the food had started to arrive. His natural inclination to control communal matters had suddenly been supplanted by the more powerful urge to get his teeth into his quota of the shared ‘picks’ he’d eventually succeeded in ordering up for everyone. Now that he was talking only to us, he had reverted to his natural Scottish accent. ‘Aye, great kids, those O’Brien youngsters,’

he said while drizzling olive oil over a slice of crusty bread that he’d already smeared with the flesh of a tomato. ‘Never had the least bit o’ trouble at school with any o’ them since they came to the island. Model students, that lot.’

Ellie cleared her throat. ‘So, ehm,’ she began hesitantly,

‘you, uh, you wouldn’t say that Dec would be prone to, say, under-age driving, or anything like that?’

Jock speared a small shoal of deep-fried anchovies with his fork. ‘Under-age drivin’, did ye say?’

‘Yes, you know – borrowing one of his family’s cars to drive into Palma when his mother and father were… well, when they’re…’

‘Pissed?’ Jock suggested.

Ellie smiled uneasily. ‘Well, yes, I suppose you could put it that way. But what I really mean is –’

‘Listen, hen,’ Jock butted in, ‘I know what ye’re gettin’

at. But, hey, believe me, for all their rent-a-party lifestyle, the O’Briens have never missed a trick as far as bringin’ up their pot lids is concerned.’
